Lake Hāwea is a subject I’ve painted often as part of my series of blue landscapes. Here I return, perhaps one last time, with my largest painting inspired by Lake Hāwea. I love to let the blue pigment shine in these paintings, sometimes strong, sometimes ethereal. There is something particular about the stones in the clear water, the colours, and the shapes of the mountains, I find more compelling than any other lake. I wanted to embrace subjectivity and heighten colour, to paint a place somewhere between reality, emotion and memory.
